Lot of people tend to forget what hip-hop is all about. Originally it was the music of the oppressed black people; it spoke about freedom and rights. It spoke about revolution… but like many other genres money overtook everything and hip-hop was commercialized. Of course there were a lot of great hip-hop artists that spoke not about politics and freedom, but pioneers like NWA and Public Enemy really did their part in spreading the word. Today more and more people join the urban culture just because of the designs and music without supporting any ideas or even having political ideas. The protest nearly died, but still there are some people and crews that support the original game. One of such crews founded DTA Clothing (which stands for Don’t Trust Anyone) a brand that puts message and protest on top of their products.
DTA was formed by a group of friends in 1991 and existed in various forms since that time. For some time it existed together with the Rouge Status brand (another clothing brand that has provocative designs as their main weapon), even now they have the same street team, but DTA is a stand alone brand. As clothing line DTA offers everything from hoodies to accessories, with two of their main features – provocative designs and slogans and great quality. DTA tees are probably the most provocative if we look at few examples: one t-shirt mimics the USA Today logo, another is almost a military call for joining the ranks of DTA and finally one more shows that DTA is watching you. In addition to this DTA Clothing also exploits the topic of weapons, aggression and government control, basically it touches all the aspects that are important to modern conscious youth.
It is great that more and more people involved in urban culture today tend to support the protesting brands and more and more companies choose the way of the free speech. This is a tendency that would definitely please the pioneers of the genre and all the people that still carry the torch. Can’t say that DTA is too extreme in their designs, but in times like these when we have obviously lying governments, crisis and total paranoia maybe it is the right time to show your protest by wearing it as a tee. And DTA is one of the best candidates for style with a message!
